Under the motto ‘building communities’ the 8th Congress of European Microbiologists (FEMS 2019) brought together 1912 delegates from over 20 countries in Glasgow, Scotland. Over the course of five days (July 7th – 11th, 2019) speakers from 23 countries presented on the most recent developments in microbiology as part of 7 keynote lectures, 32 symposia and 24 workshops. Eleven main congress topics were selected to address some of the global challenges we face today, such as antimicrobial resistance, environmental pollution and the emergence of pathogenic disease. In addition to the scientific programme, FEMS organized a community corner with conversations on why it is important to embrace diversity to build inclusive communities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Furthermore, a public event was organized featuring Bad Bugs Book Club hosted by Professor Jo Verran, author, Lesley Kelly and an expert panel discussing ‘Influenza: in fact and fiction’.
MicrobiomeSupport was presented in a poster session on the July 10th. Further, the #MicrobiomeAmbassador campaign was promoted in the poster session and the event attendance was disseminated via Twitter.
